February Beauty Finds: Sparkle or Dull?

Guys, how weird of a month was February? I don’t know about wherever you are, but the weather here in Ohio was so weird….hot one minute, snowstorm the next. I felt like I was just as much a hot mess as the weather was!

Overall it was a busy month for me…lots of great things happening with my team and business. Busy days means not a lot of sleep around here, so I was excited to try out the two products I am reviewing for the month because I knew both would help me exponentially.

Product #1: Eye-V Moisture Boost Hydrogel Patches

I mentioned I haven’t been sleeping much, right??? My success partner Nichole and I have been meeting every morning at 5am, and you guys know how I am….I go to bed about 2am or so every night. Yeah, I look a hot mess when I get up, and not just a hot mess, a hot mess with puffy eyes!

I’ve tried under eye patches before and always hoped for great results. Most of the time I have been disappointed and felt like nothing was different after I used the product. A friend of mine, Sandi, had shared about a patch she sold through Nerium and mentioned how great it worked. I decided it was worth a shot to try.

So excited to see if they live up to the hype

I was so excited when I got my little package in the mail from Sandi and couldn’t wait to try them out! The patches come individually wrapped, which makes them easy to take on the go. Some patches I have tried in the past aren’t as convenient for us on-the-go types.

These patches are very easy to use…you peel them off the backing and apply, then leave them on for about 20 minutes. I put them on while I had my morning coffee and instantly loved how they felt. Sandi had shared with me that it was best to put these in the fridge before use, which I did. This made them nice and chill when I put them under my eyes!

Oh look, me without makeup!

I try to get a lot of sleep, but I am a weird sleeper. For example, I go to bed later than I should (usually around 2pm these days), get up at 4:45am for a business meeting, then go back to sleep for awhile. Even though I get sleep, I still sometimes have puffier eyes.

I wasn’t expecting a miracle with these things….no product is going to do that with a single use, but I’ll tell you what…I was super pleased with these patches! In my opinion the photos don’t do their magic justice…I noticed in the mirror such a difference that I don’t think is reflected in the pics below (Before is to the left; After is to the right).

Things I loved about this product: It was easy to use (always a good thing), reduced some of the bags I was rocking, and really tightened the skin up. I felt a difference right away, and when the time came for me to put my makeup on I could see the visible difference. With some photoshoots coming up and lots of activities, you better believe these patches are going to be a staple in my routine.

FINAL VERDICT: Sparkle all day, baby!

Product #2: Nyx Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick

My go to lipstick is always a matte….I just am not one that likes the gloss look much. Every once in awhile you will see me with it, but it is a rare occurrence. Because of that, I tend to avoid most liquid lipsticks.

I’ve reviewed Nyx products before and have loved them…..they are hands down my favorite drugstore brand. As it usually happens…..I was strolling through Target and a bright pink color caught my eye….and I had to have it.

17193709_10158279357880244_421461979_o.jpg

Some colors are just obviously Katie.

The color was the Pink Lust/Passion Rose Nyx Liquid Suede. As you can tell, the color is 100% one that is in my main palette. At about $6, I was ready to give this suede stuff a try.
I got home from Target and did my usual workout/shower routine. Since I was fresh faced I figured I would try out this new color.

At 9pm, BIG MISTAKE! As my snapchat followers can confirm, I put this on and couldn’t get it off! Usually I would be pleased about this, but at this time of night I didn’t need extreme staying power.

I tried it out later in the week when I had a full day of activities and meetings….I as pleased that I didnt have to reapply once. The color was vibrant and didn’t dry out my lips….definitely a great lip product!

FINAL VERDICT: Sparkle!!!!!!!

May Beauty Finds: Sparkle or Dull?

I feel like I was just writing a review for April’s Beauty Finds……oh wait….I was!

Happy to report that I am back on track with my blog and back to my usual posting schedule!

So let’s chat about some possible new beauty additions for your collection!

I get a lot of questions about makeup every day, and lately lipstick is the hot topic. I like to think of myself as a lipstick connoisseur, and while I tend to gravitate toward certain brands that I know to be tried and true, I am always up for trying new brands. My go to lipstick is a matte finish….I’m not a huge gloss person because I don’t really like the stickiness or the fact that my hair can get stuck in it if it’s a tad windy outside. Because of this, I haven’t encountered many liquid lipsticks/glosses that have worked for me (To date, only the Melted liquid lipsticks from Too Faced have passed my test). This month I decided to give another liquid lipstick a try!

Product #1: Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick

I am a big Anastasia fan….I use their brow pomade and pencil as well as their glow and contour kits daily, but had never given their lip line a try. This month it was time for the liquid lipstick that they claimed had the matte finish that I love so much.

The color I selected (and that can be seen here as well as in my previous post which you can read here) was Electric Coral. I will be honest….I was hoping it would be a little more tangerine/orangey, but was pleasantly surprised when it had a reddish hue to it (we all know that I love my reds). I opted to try this out on a weekend where I had a lot to do….days when I am go go go I need a lip product that stays on without a lot of reapplication.

Let me share with you what I liked about this liquid lipstick: darn near everything! I applied it first thing in the morning and did not need to reapply until about 4pm…which was after I had eaten…I always reply after lunch. The color was rich and a true matte, so I was very happy. The only thing that I noticed was that it slightly dried my lips out the first time. When I wore the lipstick again, I applied a little plain chapstick before application and I was perfectly fine.

FINAL VERDICT: SPARKLE!!!!!

Product #2: LA Girl Pro Concealer Set

Concealers are always tricky. I feel like I’ve tried about a billion of them, finding some that I like, but not love. I used to rely heavily on them when I was younger because my skin would break out and do all sorts of weird things, but thankfully I don’t have those issues anymore (Shakeology and water intake….my secrets to clear skin). Nowadays I rely on concealer to help me when I don’t get enough sleep and have pesky under eye circles.

I chose this particular concealer set to review because I have been curious about the color correcting formulas that I have seen on the market and thought it could be a great cost effective solution for someone in need of a great concealer.

Three colors for me to try!

Here’s the skinny on color correction: you may think the different colors look funny in their tubes, but they actually have a purpose. Ipsy shared this graphic with their followers awhile back, and I think it is great for breaking it down.

The LA Girl concealer set I reviewed for this piece includes orange, yellow, and green concealers, colors I felt would be best for me to try out. I specifically chose to try them out for the first time on a day when I had very little sleep and woke up looking a bit wretched, and I tried out all three colors since I had a tiny bit of redness, too.

Initial thoughts: What the heck is this???? The orange color made me look strange, and I was worried the green hue would show through any foundation. The yellow was closer to what I was used to, and I applied that after I had blended in the orange hue (Note: I used a blending sponge for this). Once blended I didn’t look as scary with the colors and applied my Kat Von D Foundation and Ben Nye Banana Powder as I usually would. You can see my before and after using the concealers below. The photo on the left: zero makeup up; the right photo features the blended concealers, foundation, and powder.

I liked this product….I really did…but I am not sure if it worked any better than the Nyx concealer I typically use. Using three concealers instead of one is a bit more maintenance, but if you are someone seriously struggles with redness, dark spots, or blue tones I truly think this product will help you. I just didn’t have enough of those issues going on to truly see a difference.

The good thing about the product: the price. I purchased all three for about $9, which is great. La Girl is also a product line relatively easy to find…you can purchase it at Walmart, Drugstore.com, even Amazon.

FINAL VERDIT: Semi-Sparkle!!!!!

Off to find some fabulous products to review for June!

Favorite Finds of 2015

As a self admitted beauty addict, I am always interested in finding products to add to my ever growing collection. 2015 brought a lot of new products into my life….some good, some bad, some cheap, some expensive. I wanted to take a quick minute to share with you my absolute favorite finds so you can check them out, too! My goal was to share my top ten, but I couldn’t….there were twelve items that had me jumping for joy this year, and I have to share them all!

Let’s meet my favorite finds of 2015!

12. Aloha Coconut Chapstick

I am always after great lip products (there are a couple on this list) because  I hate chapped lips. Running outside in the winter often wrecks havoc on them, so when I find products I love that help with it, I get excited. My mom got me this chapstick this year (she knows about my love for all things coconut), and it not only smells great and tastes great, it works great, too.

11.  The Wet Brush

Hair care is important to me….have you seen this mane? It can go from a perfectly manicured hairdo to a rats nest very quickly if I fail to take care of it. I’ve tried about a billion brushes in my day, but this one takes the cake. I can have a major tangled mess, and this bad boy has worked wonders on my hair. There are various sizes (I always have a mini one in my purse for emergencies), and if you do some searching, you can find these super cheap….even Groupon runs deals on them from time to time.

10. Bare Minerals Bareskin Perfecting Face Brush

Makeup brushes are one thing that I do not skimp on. If you buy cheaper ones, I have found you have to replace them more, bristles fall out, and you end up spending more. Invest in quality brushes. Trust me, your face will thank you.  This foundation brush is my favorite ever. See how the middle is kind of cut out? I know it looks strange, but this really helps evenly distribute your foundation on your face for a flawless look.

9. Kat Von D Lock It Foundation

Speaking of foundation, this year I finally found my soul mate shade and brand. With my wedding approaching, I went into a Sephora and had the poor sales associate try pretty much every single foundation known to man on my face to find the perfect shade and coverage. Prior to finding Kat Von D I had dabbled with Becca foundation, but having to mix two colors to perfect the shade for my face was not only annoying, but costly. The minute this angelic foundation from Kat was on my face, I knew I had found the one. The coverage is amazing, it is light and doesn’t feel or look cakey, and even though it is a little pricey, you don’t use a ton with application. Worth every penny. Before buying it, I advise you go into a Sephora or Kat Von D retailer and have someone shade match you. You don’t want to spend $35 on a bottle and get home only to realize it is too dark for you.

8. Lush Space Girl Bath Bomb

I am obsessed with Lush and obsessed with anything that makes a bath feel like a spa day. I’ve had many items from Lush in my day and have never met a product of theirs that I hated, but this year I met the Space Girl bath bomb, and a new favorite was born. The smell is great, there’s some sparkle to it, and there’s some sparkle to it, and it is just cute to look at (I’m such a girl).

7. Nyx Bloody Mary Matte Lipstick

I accidentally found this lipstick when searching for the perfect shade for my engagement photos. We all know I am obsessed with red lipstick (my signature shade is Mac So Chaud), but I wanted something a little different with a bit more of a pinkish/reddish hue. One day I strolled into Ulta and realized Nyx was having a huge sale, so I figured it was worth a shot. There, for about $3.00, I found Bloody Mary. It’s a quality Matte and stays on without reapplication. This purchase started a really healthy relationship with Nyx that I don’t see ending anytime soon.

6. OGX Coconut Milk Serum

I’ve blogged about this fabulous stuff earlier in the year, but I have to talk about it again. It’s ah-mazzzzzz-ing. Again, I love coconuts and having healthy hair, and this combines both! I take a small dollop of it each night and run it through my hair to keep it healthy and shiny. Plus, I go to bed smelling of the beach, and I’m ok with that. A little of this goes a long way though, so word from the wise…..don’t use too much!

5. Lilly Lashes 3D Mink Lashes

False eyelashes are my thing….I wear them pretty much every day, so I like to think I know a thing of two about them. This year I cheated on House of Lashes, my usual go to lash place, and purchased some mink lashes from Lilly Lashes. I was beyond pleased with the quality, how long they last, and the look. I’ve worn them for pretty much every big occasion this year and won’t be quitting anytime soon. My favorites are Mykonos (seen below) and Miami (which I wore for my wedding). If you aren’t sure how to apply them or the hype behind them, I made a quick tutorial awhile back that may help you……you can access it here .

4. Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm

All time best lip balm, right here. This is intensive and has helped me on even the coldest of days. I don’t even know what else to say about it other than it makes my lips happy and has prevented me from problems in the cold weather!

Screen Shot 2016-01-03 at 2.52.14 PM
3. Daily Grind Snarky Bar

Oh-Em-Geeeeeeeeeee. As a coffee addict, I usually jump at anything with coffee in the title. When I saw this soap, known as a snarky bar, I had to have it. Made with coffee grounds? Ok! I don’t know if I thought maybe the coffee on my skin would give me an extra boost or what, but needless to say, I tried it, fell in love, and now will always be using one.

2. Urban Decay Naked on the Run

I can’t live without this set.Urban Decay is my #1 makeup brand of choice, and when I was purchasing some other items, a kind sales associate suggested I consider buying this palette. Best suggestion ever. In this you get 5 eye eyeshadows, blush, bronzer, highlighter, lipgloss, eyeliner, and mascara (my favorite mascara FYI). At $54, it is a steal. Now whenever I am on the go, I grab this and have pretty much everything I need! I love it so much that it is something I gifted to some friends this year at Christmas. Great for anyone on the go! P.S. Right now it is on sale for $32. Buy it. You’ll thank me!

1. Tony Moly Banana Hand Milk

I cannot live without this item….I’m dead serious. It is my absolute favorite find of 2015 and is with me everywhere I go. Besides loving coffee, I am obsessed with bananas. This lotion is not only packaged like a cute banana, but it smells just like one and moisturizes better than anything else I have tried. You’re welcome.

Lip Service

I get a lot of slack for some of the things that I do, but there is one particular thing that seems to get me more grief than anything.

My lipstick use.

I, by no means, try to hide my love of makeup. It is fabulous and amazing. I mean, what else gives you the power to change how you look and be playful in a naturally fun, inexpensive, non permanent way? Makeup allows me to one day rock a bold and colorful peacock inspired eye then turn around the next day to something much more demure. I like a lot of things….and I like the option for variety. One makeup item I could never live without: lipstick. I should’ve seen it coming. After all, I was all about stocking up on my Bonne Bell when I was younger, slowly opting for the shinier, brighter ones as time went one.

These and a few of their friends may all be in my purse right now.

These and a few of their friends may all be in my purse right now.

What most people don’t seem to understand is while I love wearing lipstick, I don’t wear it simply because it looks awesome. There are legit benefits to wearing lipstick, and that is why you will see me wearing it when I run or am doing more active things.

Let’s break down some of those benefits.

1. Did you know lips lack melanin, which helps protect them from UV rays? Because of this you want to make sure your lips aren’t exposed without protection. Wear matte or opaque lipsticks with SPF of 15 or higher to help protect your lips from sun exposure!

2. Lipstick moisturizes your lips. This is singlehandedly THE BIGGEST reason why I wear it all the time. I hate chapped lips. I hate when they feel rough….and this tends to happen when I run, especially in the cold weather. It doesn’t look attractive either. The lipsticks I wear when I run and when I go out in the winter months have some kind of moisturizing additives, like aloe vera and vitamin E.

Lipstick to run in? Yes, please!

Lipstick to run in? Yes, please!

3. Confidence. That’s right, I said it. Numerous studies have shown that people feel sexier and more confident when wearing lipstick, and I will be real here…even if there wasn’t a study done to state this, I would claim it as a benefit because it is 100% truth, and I feel my one person study should matter.

4. Intensifies your eyes. Regardless of the color of your eyes, lipstick can make the color more intensified and bright. Blues appear bluer, and even dirt brown eyes like mine are more colorful. Don’t believe me? Whip out a fantastic Mac lipstick and take a picture of yourself with lipstick and without. I bet you will be pleasantly surprised. Dimitri James, beauty expert and creator of Skinn Cosmetics, states, ” those with blue eyes should try lip shades in rose, pink, bronze, copper, and brown, while hazel eyes should go for violet, plum, fuchsia, and red-violet hues. Green eyes look best with mauve, lavender, plum, burgundy, and wine colors, and brown eyes look best with coral, peach, burgundy, purple, gold-red, nude-beige, and dark blue-red lipsticks.” Thanks, Dimitri!

5. Makes your face look slimmer. Yes, SLIMMER! Color draws the attention to your lips instead of the outline of your face!

6. Better posture. A recent study by L’Oreal showed that women who rock lipstick have better posture because we are stretching to apply it, improving our posture, even if it is only for a split second.

7. Brighter Smile. Lipstick brightens your smile by making your teeth look brighter and whiter depending on the shade you wear. I highly recommend determining your undertones so you can find the best color….you don’t want a frosted or dark color to make your teeth appear yellower than what they are either.

8. FUN! Yes, I am making this my own self diagnosed benefit. Wearing lipstick can instantly brighten your mood, make you happier, and help you have a fun, enjoyable day, and that, my friends, may be the best benefit of them all.

What are my favorites? If I HAD to choose. These would be it. My signature shade that most people identify with me is clearly “So Chaud” by Mac. Unbelievable with its color, staying power, and classic look. In fact, this is the lipstick I choose to wear when I run in the Warrior Dash. That’s right…I jump around and submerge myself in mud, and this bad boy stays put and looking fab. Worth every penny.

lips

My friends who are reading who are terrified of trying new lipsticks…..live a little. Try something new. Two weeks ago I was down in DC and being that my friend Emily and I were visiting another makeup junkie (love you, Ren), we naturally ended up in Sephora. Emily was hesitant to try a bold lip because she was convinced she would look like she was playing dress up and stole her mother’s shoes. After some persuasive debate from Marenda and I, Emily gave into peer pressure, bought the suggested lipstick, and looked absolutely gorgeous. Super proud of her for living on the edge with a funky color, and I am pretty positive she loves it, too.

Lipstick can be your pal f you give it a chance. The best part? If you don’t like it, you can just wipe it off and start again.

Now if only everything was that easy.
