You know what is a really great feeling? Having a goal of something and FINALLY making it happen! It’s the kind of feeling that makes an ordinary day extraordinary. Today was that kind of day for me. I know…surprising for me because I always seem to have a case of the Mondays.
When I was little I could never tell you one specific thing I wanted to me when I grew up (My mother may beg to differ, as for a brief time my main goal in life was to run away to California and live as Cyndi Lauper’s sister). I loved so many things and had so many interests. As an adult, I still have no clue what I want to be when I grow up. I’m all over the place, that’s just me.
Over the last five years I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out a new direction in life. Even though I have loved the decade I have spent in higher education, I miss the chance to be able to express myself creatively. Everyone knows I have a creative streak in me that can never be silenced completely. Do I want to design? Do I want to bake? What do I want to do? Time and time again I kept returning to pursuing a second career in photography. I’ve always taken pictures and loved remembering the story or memory associated with each one. I considered going back to school several years back but just wasn’t able to make it fit in with my life at that particular time. It definitely has been one of those things that I didn’t want to do in a lackadaisical manner. Go big or go home. That’s the way I have always lived my life.
Earlier this fall something snapped in my brain where I knew it was time. I’ve been thinking and talking about this photography thing for so long, I needed to do something about it or just go a different direction. So I went to my local camera store, Dodd Camera (the best camera store around), purchased a super cool professional camera and necessary equipment, enrolled in a photography degree program, and embarked on a new journey. I know I have the skills to rock at this endeavor (so do many of you, thanks for letting me take photos of your animals and kids!) and am so excited about it!!!!
Today was a big day for me and this goal of taking my photography business to a new level. I officially completed all of the paperwork necessary to register my business and name with the Secretary of State! I also am in the early stages of designing the artwork and logo design for my website and promotional materials with an amazingly talented graphic artist. It is the coolest feeling to not just be talking about something, but actually doing it.
As C.S. Lewis famously stated:
“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.”
Oh, you want to know my business name? I’ll share that soon enough.
In the meantime, if you have a pet, child, or newborn and want some cool pictures taken for free, I’m actively working on building my portfolio and would love take some snaps!
